Children’s Services Librarian

QLDC has a network of eight libraries in the district and a partnership relationship with libraries in Central Otago.  The mission of the Central Otago/Queenstown Lakes (CQ) Libraries is to provide the highest quality library services to fulfil the informational, educational, recreational and cultural needs of the community.  It is to provide a co-operative system of services for the diverse community of Libraries in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes Districts; to facilitate the sharing of resources among Libraries for the benefit of all; and to develop Library services beyond the scope of the individual member Libraries.

The Libraries are integral to the delivery of community services across the district and are an important interface between QLDC and the wider community.

The Role

The Children’s Services Librarian is responsible for managing the development, implementation and delivery of inspirational, effective and inclusive services for children and teens across the district’s libraries.  The position will lead, develop and empower the Children’s Team to foster the joy of reading and support the development of literacy, learning and creativity.  The Children’s Services Librarian will build a collaborative Children’s Library Services Team that will deliver a cohesive programme efficiently across the district.  This role will also include: circulation tasks, to encompass a combination of handling enquiries from the public;  issuing and returning library items;  general shelving duties, supporting the wider team and facilitating library services with an emphasis on the provision of a positive customer experience at all times, both internal and external. 

About You

  • Tertiary diploma qualification in a relevant or related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years relevant library experience
  • Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills
  • Professional registration desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of library management and processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of standard computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of information literacy
  • Working knowledge of children’s literature, current trends, collection development and information services principles and practices
  • Excellent communication skills - written, spoken and interpersonal
  • A commitment to Te Reo and Tikanga Maori
  • Enjoys communicating with and assisting people from other cultures, communities and countries
  • Highly literate and a good level of numeracy
  • Team player, collaborative application
  • Ability to be helpful, respectful and responsive
  • Flexibility in availability for work including evenings and weekends, and at other branch libraries within the Queenstown Lakes Library district
  • Physical fitness, able to meet the demands of the job
  • Personal commitment to the role of public libraries and lifelong learning
