The latest news and advice from our recruitment experts.
Does your career need a bit of a jump start? Because we’ve heard through the grapevine that you might need to re-charge those batteries, have a complete oil change and rev things up, because when it comes down to it – your career progression is entirely up to you.
Don’t shoot the messenger because you’re not willing to face the cold hard facts. We are all in charge of the “what next” scenario, the “where to from here” and yes, sometimes reality is hard, but it’s also a very powerful tool to get your inner engine running on all cylinders. The alternative? Well, you’ve already seen a glimpse of what frustration looks like, the gloomy pits of despair and hopelessness is definitely not a place you want to be.
We’re not saying you’re to blame but alas if you are sitting there procrastinating, worrying, biting your nails and waiting for your promotion to fall out of the sky – it won’t.
Career plateauing is frustrating and it holds you down. Frustration turns to anger, anger turns to moaning and it’s a downward spiral - but whose fault is it?
It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut, get too contented in your comfort zone and whilst you’re taking life at work a little too cruisy, watch out for the new kid on the block who is about to overtake you on the inside lane.
Chances are he or she is offering something new and improved, they’re adding real value and it’s making the powers that be happy. It’s now time for you to rise above the mediocrity and start expanding your skill set, determine what you need to develop and acquire so you can start adding value to you and your team.
Invest your own time and money instead of waiting for HR to come along and wave their magic wand. If nothing else, you’ll pleasantly surprise everyone who thought you had fallen into the too hard basket and now look at you!
Don’t become one of those people you despise – the regretful draining type, go out and make it happen today.
“It’s not the mountain we conquer, it’s ourselves”
~ Sir Edmund Hillary
A great quote isn’t it? Sir Edmund Hillary literally promoted himself to the top through sheer willpower and determination – pretty stellar work for a bee keeper from Tuakau.
It wouldn’t have been easy. Sir Ed would have been dealing with a lot of self-talk, whys and wherefores, but this proves to get to the top you have to remain focused.
It can be infuriating and frustrating to say the least especially because you already have a raft of amazing projects in your repertoire pre this year. In 2015 and beyond, no one can rest on their laurels or old achievements. Start focusing on what you need to do, to do better, ask your boss or better still, come up with your own solutions. Tell them you’ll achieve a goal in the next three months that grabs their attention, and then go out and solidify that goal.
Learn new stuff, meet new people who are willing to help get you there. Building alliances, leveraging with other skilled people that can assist you all the way will lead you to that path to success. Who knows, if you don’t get that next promotion after all your hard work – you may have just met your new business partner or boss along the way.
