Good news for you inspite of the current economic situation
One of the good things about the economic situation that we find
ourselves in today is the easing of the labour market.
For years New Zealand businesses have struggled to find and
retain good staff. Businesses have been in the habit of
employing someone quickly - rather than focusing on finding the
right person. It was either act quickly or miss out on the
good candidates. This meant that we were employing people who
may have had the skills we required but were completely wrong for
the team and company fit. One wrong person can ruin the total
company dynamics, bringing down productivity and often meaning that
the good people left.
The unemployment rate is expected to climb from 4.2% to 6.5% by
the middle of 2009 according to The Treasury. Reports as high
as 8% unemployment are predicted for 2010. QJumpers has seen
the number of applicants per role double from July to December
2008. Trademe Jobs has just reported an increase of one third
in applicant numbers. All job boards and most recruitment
companies have experienced a major decline in the number of jobs
posted. Looking at current numbers listed on SEEK and Trademe
jobs, the number of listings have dropped to about half compared to
what they were getting 6 to 12 months previously.
This is fantastic news for employers!
Now is the time to look at your company vision, revisit your
company values and take the time to get the right people in the
right seats on your company bus (if you have not read
'Good to Great' by Jim Collins yet- I suggest you take a
read…it is very relevant in today's times).
Kick off the people who don't want to be on your bus and who
don't share your vision or passion. Then get advertising!
